I don’t think I’m a foodie, in the modern sense of the word, but I know good food when I taste it. I’ve have had to fend for myself for a long time, and if you want to eat well you have to learn how to cook. I did a short stint in a couple restaurants, but I don’t like the pressure. Good food takes time, unless you can prep ahead, so living in a truck with very little space, the choices are limited. I do well during the week, but when I get the chance, I like to go out. I just got back to Maine today so I stopped into Bullwinkle’s Steak House on Rte 1 in Waldoboro. I’m always on the lookout for quality food at a reasonable price, and they did not disappoint. I ordered the Montreal Rib eye, medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service great. The drinks were not weak as is the case in many places trying to increase the margin. The hostess working today was very nice and showed a true interest in how well I enjoyed my meal. Overall, I give them 4.5 out of 5 stars. There’s no doubt I will be back.
Places like this are in complete contrast to truck stop food. You won’t often find a “Good” cook at a truck stop, never mind a chef! Order a steak, and you will be disappointed. Poor quality, no idea how to cook to medium rare, and the sides are from a box. I guess you can’t expect much for $8.95, all you can eat. I have stopped eating anything other than an occasional salad from truck stops.
Though I like to eat better food now than in the past, I’m not going to live my life looking for “organic” this, or “all natural” that. I don’t care if they are “free range” chickens or eggs. I don’t believe that’s truly “grass fed” cattle on my fork. I do care if it is fresh. I do care that animals raised for food should be treated with care and respect. It makes me sick to see video’s of animals being mistreated. People guilty of such should receive greater penalties than they do. No animal should die such a death as in those video’s.
I have gained weight since I quit smoking, and I am trying to lose some before next summer. Buy no means am I greatly overweight, but I could go down that road if I’m not careful. Living a sedentary lifestyle you have to reduce your calories to match your exercise level. I don’t believe in diets, JUST DON’T EAT SO MUCH! You can’t take in 5000 calories a day and expect to stay slim! I do walk every day with my dog, but not as much as I used to. I reduced my calories to about 1200 per day, and I have lost 8 lbs in the last month without feeling hungry all the time. I need to stay healthy if I want to set sail in the future!
