The Other Maine

What do you think of when someone says Maine? Do you see the beautiful coastline, the many harbors, the lobster boats? That’s only a small portion of this state. Almost 70% of Maine is uninhabited! No power lines, no stores, no towns, and in many areas there are no roads!

Those are all very fine to go see, if you don’t mind those people “From Away!” If you really want to get away, spend some time IN nature, not just beside it, go to Baxter State Park. There you will find large numbers of what I believe to be two of the most noble creatures on this planet, moose and deer! (Don’t go in the spring…Black Fly Season!)

For a taste of “The Other Maine”, the more rural side of things, here’s a short video of the road from Kingfield to Farmington Maine that I took this afternoon.

  1. Oh good grief! That is absolutely my sort of landscape …. I need to visit. I need to spend time there. Oddly I have just finished a novel set partially on the coast of Maine so I too had got my biased idea of the landscape. Now I see this I’m beginning to feel the feet itch and the obsession rising …. by the way, you would love my part of France – it’s the forgotten lands that appeal to me most, I suppose ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. The invitation is there …. when I am back and installed in France it would be my pleasure to show you around the bits that people pass by in their rush to get to the bits where they all squeeze in cheek by jowel and scowl at one another!!

      2. Italy is idyllic …. people scoff at the Italian attitude to life but they have it nailed (not the Romans and Milanese – they are self-conscious city dwellers) but they just shrug and get on with life. They don’t expect anything from anyone except the love of their family. And they LOVE food ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I’m in.. “the other Maine” and am so fortunate to have some of the bank of the the mighty Penobscot and a really nice wide brook for a border of my property.. ferns and mushrooms on the forest floor, really dense tall mix of trees.. Many are birch which is awesome because they’re my favorite.. Maples which I will trying tapping for syrup next year, if its too late this year.. I love it here.. It’s changed from being my second home to my “other” home.. Equal in rooted love..

But yes, I love forests rivers and lakes.. and being remote.. I can have company if I want to or not.. And run nakey thru my woods if I want to ๐Ÿ˜‰
        without embarrassment..
Maine is perfect.. And I kind of like the idea of being a Maineiac, it fits me like a glove.. when I’m not running around naked.. Can’t be wearing gloves if I’m naked ๐Ÿ˜•

  3. Yeah, that could be a bad thing.. You know how sociable Stewie isn’t with strangers ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
But once you get to know him you only have to worry that I’m running around in my birthday suit ๐Ÿ˜‚

That’s too funny really.. I have a friend in Va. that gardens topless.. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve brought her a top outside to put on.. I’d never make it in a nudist colony ๐Ÿ˜„
