Ripple In Still Waters

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It’s a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they’re better left unsung.
I don’t know, don’t really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You, who choose to lead, must follow
But if you fall you fall alone.
If you should stand then who’s to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

La dee da da da,
La da da da da,
Da da da, da da, da da da da da
La da da da,
La da da, da da,
La da da da,
La da, da da.

Ripple – The Grateful Dead

You may know this song well, but I suggest you follow the above link for a different take.

Anyone who has read more than one post I have written should be able to see how inspired I am by the lyrics to songs I so enjoy. As I read them aloud in the golden morning rays of sunlight, notes from unseen instruments swirl through my mind along with voices of those who gave spirit to the alphabet. Each verse touches me with images and experiences I remember from the past and seem as if written just for me. That to me is the mark of a truly gifted person, someone I aspire to emulate.

As I struggle for the correct words in this post I feel like I’m wearing the sweaty “Tie Dye” shirt thrown from the stage, a hand me down trying to find my voice in the presence of greatness. Perhaps I will stumble, but I don’t care. My attempts at placing in your mind the feelings I have are what bring me joy, just as the song writer did for me with this beautiful piece.

My cup has been empty for so long I forget what it’s like to feel full of joy, yet I have done my best to fill the cups of others. Maybe I have been looking in the wrong place? Maybe the act of filling is the true joy? Maybe the fountain can be made by the hands of man and the water given freely in the name of goodwill? I will do my best to find out.

We each have a road before us, twisting and winding it’s way to our future. There are few lights to guide us, no maps to lead the way. Instincts, feelings and hopes are the tools we use to find our route, each path before us is for our steps alone. Some may try to follow but it is impossible to place your feet in the exact same spot without falling. You must choose your own way.

Some try to lead others in the vain attempt at making a name for oneself, but in reality they are simply following another path tread by others. They will inevitably fall and when they do, the rest will scatter and blame the leader for their own misguided steps. I will stand alone with no one to guide me, I will choose the road to my future.  I don’t know the way, but I am not afraid to try.

Capturing nature is my goal in life!
