Mr Jones And Me

I was down at the New Amsterdam
Staring at this yellow-haired girl
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation
With a black-haired flamenco dancer

You know she dances while his father plays guitar
She’s suddenly beautiful
And we all want something beautiful
Man, I wish I was beautiful

So come dance this silence down through the morning

Cut up, Maria!
Show me some of them Spanish dances
And pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones

Believe in me
Help me believe in anything
‘Cause I wanna be someone who believes

Mr. Jones and me tell each other fairy tales
And we stare at the beautiful women
“She’s looking at you. Oh, no, no, she’s looking at me.”

Smiling in the bright lights
Coming through in stereo
When everybody love you,
You can never be lonely

Well, I’mma paint my picture
Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray
All of the beautiful colors are very-very meaningful

Yeah well you know gray is my favorite color
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Picasso
I would buy myself a gray guitar and play

Mr. Jones and me look into the future
Yeah we stare at the beautiful women
“She’s looking at you.
I don’t think so. She’s looking at me.”

Standing in the spotlight
I bought myself a gray guitar
When everybody love me,
I will never be lonely

I will never be lonely
Said I’m never gonna be lonely,

I wanna be a lion
Everybody wanna pass as cats
We all want to be big big stars,
But we got different reasons for that

Believe in me
‘Cause I don’t believe in anything
And I wanna be someone to believe, to believe, to believe

Mr. Jones and me stumbling through the barrio
Yeah we stare at the beautiful women
“She’s perfect for you, man, there’s got to be somebody for me.”

I wanna be Bob Dylan
Mr. Jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky
When everybody love you,
Oh, son, that’s just about as funky as you can be

Mr. Jones and me staring at the video
When I look at the television,
I wanna see me staring right back at me

We all want to be big stars,
But we don’t know why
And we don’t know how
But when everybody love me,
I wanna be just about as happy as I can be

Mr. Jones and me, we’re gonna be big stars

Mr Jones – Counting Crows

I think we all have an alter ego that we wish we could become at will, a Mr Jones that personifies all we feel is best about ourselves without the baggage of unnecessary and unhelpful insecurities. Moments in time where we had all the right things to say, all the best insights that led to a perfect interaction. Alas, Mr Jones will not come forth as needed no matter how hard we try. We all want something beautiful in our lives but there’s no hidden persona that can pull it out of thin air, we must find it for ourselves.

Happiness begins when we learn to love who we are, not some image of another that fits into society as a whole. Modern culture with all it’s innuendo and false promises leads one down a path fraught with ideals that suit others more than our inner being, reflections we see are but another draw towards a never ending dance of lost hope and dismay. We never seem to measure up to what we see so the struggle lasts forever. Unless you tell Mr Jones to piss off!

I’m gonna paint my picture in my own image, flush with the colors I feel represent my view of life and all the wondrous blessings set before us. One need only open their eyes and mind to the experience. Take each day as it comes with all it’s ups and downs, pains and pleasures. Leave regret by the wayside and let yourself be engulfed in the passion that comes from another day above ground. No mere possessions can satisfy the needs of a hungry soul longing for deliverance, friends fall by the wayside as your wants change. You may own a dozen or more cars and a few homes over the years, you may have dozens of fair weather friends, but you only get one life.

Everybody want’s their 15 minutes of fame, their moment in the sun when all eyes are on them. Their alter ego reaches out from within clawing and grasping for each like or view, the measure of such bolstering is needed to satiate the lust for fame. Forever trying to best themselves and others the ego pushes on in the quest for ever greater pics or posts, quotes or thoughts. Never satisfied we continue down the same path not realizing there is no end in sight.

If we ever reach a point where everybody loves us, will it be enough?
