Be Yourself

Someone falls to pieces
Sleeping all alone
Someone kills the pain
Spinning in the silence
She finally drifts away

Someone gets excited
In a chapel yard
And catches a bouquet
Another lays a dozen
White roses on a grave

And to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

Someone finds salvation in everyone
Another only pain
Someone tries to hide himself
Down inside himself he prays

Someone swears his true love
Until the end of time
Another runs away
Separate or united?
Healthy or insane?

And to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

Even when you’ve paid enough
Been pulled apart or been held up
With every single memory of
The good or bad, faces of luck
Don’t lose any sleep tonight
I’m sure everything will end up alright

You may win or lose

But to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can
Be yourself is all that you can
Be yourself is all that you can do

Be Yourself – Audioslave

I believe we as human beings feel an incredible urge to fit in, to belong to something that we feel matters in this world. To each soul the image is different. The patterns formed from youthful desires and lessons taught by those in authority, and by experiences from our daily lives. Good or bad they stick with us and confuse who we are even to ourselves. It seems to me that figuring out who you really are, bereft of all that causes the confusion, is the one true path to happiness.

The winding road of my life is full of memories I would care to forget, yet I’m not sure I should. Each lesson learned is indeed a part of the person I see in the mirror, each fall from grace shows me where to steer my future for a better outcome. All I need now is some time alone to piece it all together, time to drown out all the noise from society as a whole and bring forth me.

There was a time when I retreated into myself, masked my pain with drugs and alcohol. Those years speak in a way that forces me to realize just how weak I can be. The self image of strength and will is tested in the pull of that self medicating stupor, forever will it tug at me. Even though the test is never ending, the difference now is the quiet voice in my mind reminding me just how far I could fall again if I fail. Each trial I have to face soon will push me to decide who I am and who I wish to be, where I go and what I leave behind.

There are some fights I will win, some I will lose. Bits of each will set the tone for future decisions, lessons combined in the hopes of better results. One must face all that comes as we have no real control in this world. We kid ourselves into thinking we have it together, we are in charge of the outcome, but tomorrow is the future and yesterday is the past. The only control you have is this very moment, and decisions you make change only the next trial that befalls you. The past is fixed and the future is fluid, the test of life is reflected in visions of the past blurred by the hope of the future.

In all of this there is one thing that really matters, and that is you. The person that resides deep down inside, past all the facade we put forth before others and away from the self deprecating feelings of weakness, that is the person that counts. Hearing what that person says to you will be the moment it all makes sense. Each person has a path to that goal, each soul in there time will find the way to fulfill their destiny. To be yourself is all that you can do, to be yourself is the goal of life.

  1. “Those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it.” We supposed to use our history to teach others to not make the same mistakes, but those who aren’t part of a “recognized” category are doomed to the outcast world. So how does “being yourself” do anyone any good? If you aren’t doing good for someone, how do you keep yourself from being buried in a shell? I know, deep stuff! Happy new year from NJ!

  2. The first time I met you I was handing you your laundry. I immediately had a sense that you are a person I am blessed to meet you. We talked about you getting prepared for the next step in your life. I look forward to following you and become more inspired
